MAPIA was formed in 1992 as various independent public insurance adjusting firms joined together to organize and assist in the filing of a class action lawsuit against State Farm Insurance Company, challenging the unfair practices and methods regarding the settlement of insureds’ property claims. State Farm was systematically withholding settlement funds from their policyholders, known in the industry as profit and overhead, which effectively reduced claim payments by at least twenty percent.

The efforts of MAPIA were successful. State Farm not only lost the litigation, but also had to reimburse the policyholders the monies they wrongfully withheld.

Since that time, MAPIA has remained an active and vigilant advocate for the insuring public:

MAPIA maintains a monitoring and liaison service to keep current with legislation which may not be deemed to be in the best interests of the consumer;

MAPIA representatives have been invited to Harrisburg to participate in discussions with the Pennsylvania Department of Insurance concerning revisions of laws which affect the insuring public;

MAPIA actively participated in conferences and workshops, traveling to Florida, Missouri and Alaska to address and confer with the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.

The defeat of State Farm resulted in a verdict benefitting all policyholders in the state of Pennsylvania. Later, a similar action was brought against State Farm in New Jersey. Once again, MAPIA’s efforts were successful.

MAPIA prides itself on being an organization comprised of professional claim representatives who demonstrate the highest level of integrity. Hiring a member firm provides the policyholder the best possible representation from a claim professional who operates ONLY on behalf of his client, YOU, the insured public.
